US Justice Department Challenges New York Law Shielding Undocumented Immigrants

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit contesting New York's "Protect Our Courts Act," which restricts immigration authorities from detaining individuals at or near courthouses. The department argues that this law deliberately prevents the lawful arrest of undocumented immigrants, including those considered dangerous, by criminalizing immigration enforcement actions in courthouse settings.

Attorney General Pamela Bondi criticized the measure, comparing it to California’s sanctuary policies, which she said obstruct immigration enforcement. She emphasized that this legal action is part of a broader federal strategy to ensure national security and uphold the rule of law.

Meanwhile, nationwide protests erupted again on Thursday in response to President Donald Trump's tough stance on immigration. In California, a federal judge in San Francisco is set to hear arguments related to the state’s legal challenge against Trump’s decision to deploy U.S. troops in Los Angeles.
