Why Spain has become a magnet for American digital nomads
Spain has emerged as one of the top destinations for American digital nomads, with the introduction of the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa in 2023 acting as a catalyst. A recent survey by Expatsi, a platform assisting Americans in relocating abroad, sheds light on the factors driving this trend.
Spain’s growing appeal among US expatriates
Over 113,000 Americans surveyed by Expatsi expressed interest in leaving the United States to work remotely in other parts of the world. Of these, 68 percent favored European destinations, with Spain ranking second after Portugal. Unlike the stereotypical transient nomad, many Americans aim to stay in Spain for extended periods, with 30 percent planning indefinite stays.
Demographics of these remote workers reveal that 44 percent are professionals with partners, 39 percent are aged between 25 and 44, and a significant portion, aged 55 to 65, is also joining the movement.
Stability and safety
Political polarization in the United States is a key motivator for many. Fifty-six percent of respondents cited dissatisfaction with the conservative political climate, while 53 percent pointed to growing polarization. In contrast, Spain is perceived as politically stable compared to the turbulence of recent US administrations.
Safety also plays a significant role. Forty-eight percent of respondents highlighted gun violence as a major concern. The US leads global statistics in gun crime, while Spain ranks far lower, making it a safer alternative.
Universal healthcare and LGBTQIA+ rights
Spain’s universal healthcare system is another draw. Sixty-eight percent of respondents seek countries with public healthcare. Spain’s system, ranked 8th globally, offers high-quality care. While access depends on social security contributions, it remains significantly more affordable than US healthcare options.
Spain also stands out for its progressive stance on LGBTQIA+ rights. The country legalized same-sex marriage in 2005 and ensures broad protections under its Trans Law, passed in 2023. This law supports gender self-determination and prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
Language and landscapes
Language is less of a barrier than in other European countries. Fifty-one percent of respondents expressed willingness to learn Spanish, which is already widely spoken in the US, making integration easier.
Spain’s diverse landscapes are another appeal. From Blue Flag beaches along its extensive coastline to majestic mountain ranges like the Pyrenees and Sierra Nevada, the country offers a variety of natural attractions. Fifty-five percent of survey participants prioritized access to beaches, while 47 percent sought mountainous terrains.
A lifestyle shift
For many Americans, Spain represents a lifestyle change—one defined by safety, inclusivity, and natural beauty. Whether seeking political stability, better healthcare, or a more welcoming environment for diverse identities, Spain has positioned itself as a top choice for remote workers looking to build a future abroad.
