Wildfires disrupt flights as Marseille airport shuts down
Flights to Marseille faced major disruptions on Tuesday after rapidly spreading wildfires in southern France forced the temporary closure of the city’s airport. Authorities halted operations as flames approached dangerously close to runways, grounding travelers and impacting several airlines.
Royal Air Maroc (RAM) canceled its AT732 flight from Casablanca to Marseille, announcing the decision on its official X account. The airline assured passengers that the closure was temporary, with air traffic expected to resume after 18:00 UTC.
Over 1,000 firefighters and water-bombing aircraft have been deployed to combat the blaze, which erupted just a few kilometers from the airport. Despite their efforts, the heat and strong winds have intensified the fire, complicating containment. Thousands of hectares have already burned, and several homes in the area have been affected. Authorities are yet to release a comprehensive damage report.
The A9 motorway, a critical route between France and Spain, was also impacted, reopening only on Tuesday after being shut down the previous day due to the fire’s rapid expansion.
Emergency teams remain on high alert as the region continues to face extreme weather conditions, with residents and travelers left grappling with the fallout.
