Wydad secure signing of sought-after playmaker Lamirate on three-year deal
Wydad Athletic Club has officially signed Abdelghafour Lamirate, the former Olympique de Safi midfielder, on a three-year contract following the expiration of his previous deal. The highly-regarded 27-year-old joins on a free transfer after a standout season that saw him play a pivotal role in OCS’s Throne Cup victory over RS Berkane.
Lamirate’s journey to Wydad
Lamirate was a key player for Olympique de Safi since joining the club in 2021 from Ben Guerir. Known for his versatility as a box-to-box midfielder, he consistently dictated the pace of play, bridging the gap between attack and defense. His performances earned him widespread recognition and made him one of the most in-demand players in the Botola Pro League this summer.
Several top clubs, including Raja Casablanca and RS Berkane, were in talks with Lamirate, but negotiations faltered, allowing Wydad to secure his signature. His addition comes as the Casablanca-based club aims to recover from a trophyless campaign and strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
A fond farewell
In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Lamirate expressed gratitude to the Olympique de Safi fans:
“To the dear fans of Asfi… You are the true heart of this team. Your love and support have always been my primary motivation on the field. Your words, your chants, your loyalty… all of this has given me strength in the toughest moments.”
Preparing for a fresh start
Lamirate is expected to join Wydad’s pre-season training camp in the coming days. The club has been active during the transfer window, with Lamirate’s arrival complementing recent defensive reinforcements. Wydad hopes these additions will help them reclaim dominance in the Botola Pro League and compete for silverware in the new season.
