Yassir Zabiri shines at U-20 World Cup, dreams of Barcelona
Yassir Zabiri has emerged as one of Morocco’s brightest stars at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup. The 20-year-old forward, who played a pivotal role in Morocco’s historic title win, shared insights about his journey in an interview with beIN Sports, emphasizing discipline, trust, and the unwavering support of his parents as key factors behind his success.
Zabiri’s football journey began at the Mohammed VI Football Academy, which he joined at the age of 10. Reflecting on his time there, he described the academy as his second home, where he received not only football training but also a strong educational foundation. “We were like brothers,” he said, crediting the academy for shaping him both on and off the pitch.
The path to glory at the U-20 World Cup was not without challenges. Zabiri acknowledged the difficulties he faced but expressed gratitude to his coach, Mohamed Ouahbi, and club officials for believing in him. “I relied on God, prayer, and my parents’ blessings to overcome the hurdles. Thank God, He was with me in this challenge.”
Zabiri’s performances stood out throughout the tournament. He scored five goals in seven matches, including two decisive strikes in the final against Argentina, which secured Morocco’s first-ever title at this level. Beyond his goal-scoring prowess, Zabiri showcased his versatility, contributing defensively and demonstrating exceptional teamwork.
The young forward praised coach Ouahbi for fostering unity within the squad and dispelling jealousy among players. “We always told him he was the best. He works hard, listens to us, and stays close to the team. He deserves to coach top clubs or national teams.”
Looking to the future, Zabiri revealed his ultimate dream: to play for Barcelona. Inspired by watching the legendary trio of Messi, Neymar, and Suárez during his youth, he remains focused on improving his game. “I will concentrate on my club, score as many goals as possible, and work towards wearing Barcelona’s shirt. It’s still far away, but I will keep chasing this dream.”
Zabiri’s breakout performances at the World Cup have not only elevated his profile internationally but also strengthened his aspirations of playing in Europe and achieving his lifelong goal of representing Barcelona.
