Spain strengthens peacekeeping efforts in Lebanon with new military deployment

La ministra de Defensa, Margarita Robles, presided over the farewell ceremony for the Spanish contingent departing for Lebanon to join the United Nations peacekeeping mission. The majority of the troops belong to the Mando de Canarias (Mcana) and will remain in Lebanese territory for the coming months.

From the Base Aérea de Torrejón de Ardoz, Robles emphasized the significance of the operation, stating, “Peace is the most important thing for which one can work in life.” She highlighted Lebanon's pivotal role in the current regional political landscape and commended the professionalism and dedication of the Spanish military personnel being deployed.

Robles also referenced the symbolism of the “blue helmet,” emblematic of the United Nations mission and the global commitment to peace. “When the Spanish flag is present anywhere in the world, we all feel immense pride. Moreover, they wear the blue beret, the greatest commitment to peace,” she remarked, alluding to the insignia worn by the peacekeepers.

The minister extended her best wishes for a “successful mission” to the soldiers, reiterating that by representing both Spain and the United Nations, they contribute to a fundamental goal for humanity: peace.
