Partido Popular strengthens internal structure ahead of congress
The Partido Popular (PP) led by Alberto Núñez Feijóo has embarked on a strategic initiative aimed at fortifying its internal structure and modernizing its organization. In preparation for the forthcoming congress scheduled for July 5 and 6 in Madrid, the party seeks to redefine its operational model, adapting to the evolving political landscape while consolidating its position as a viable alternative for governance.
To this end, a team has been appointed that marries political experience with institutional renewal, reflecting both territorial diversity and regional leadership within the political formation.
The president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, alongside María Guardiola, president of the Junta de Extremadura, Gema Igual, mayor of Santander, and Dani Sirera, spokesperson for the PP in the Barcelona City Council, will be responsible for drafting this critical organizational document. This selection is deliberate, embodying Feijóo's desire to incorporate established leaders alongside fresh voices who can provide varied perspectives in decision-making.
The Partido Popular articulates its intention to blend political experience with institutional freshness, ensuring that the statutory document captures viewpoints reflective of both regional and municipal leadership.
López Miras, noted as the party’s most experienced regional president despite his youth at 41, exemplifies political stability. Since assuming the presidency of Murcia in 2017, he has successfully navigated a motion of censure instigated by Ferraz and reaffirmed his governance in the 2023 regional elections, falling just two seats short of an absolute majority. Party sources emphasize his capability to maintain political direction even amid adverse contexts.
In parallel, María Guardiola is regarded within the PP as a "courageous leader" who has demonstrated both judgment and resolve in facing complex situations. Her ascent to the presidency of the Junta de Extremadura represents a milestone for the party, symbolizing renewal. Her previous experience as a councilor in Cáceres enriches the municipal perspective of this proposal.
On the municipal front, the PP has placed its trust in Gema Igual, who has served as the mayor of Santander since 2016 and is the vice president of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP). The party highlights her role in restoring governance in Cantabria and her local leadership capabilities, viewing her as a benchmark for municipalism in Spain.
Finally, Dani Sirera, spokesperson for the PP in Barcelona and former president of the party in Catalonia, brings insights from a region where constitutionalism faces considerable challenges. His selection strengthens the party's commitment to maintaining a resolute voice in Catalonia, symbolizing a dedication to constitutional values in one of the most complex political landscapes.
Accompanying these four leaders is Alfonso Serrano, a senator and secretary general of the PP in Madrid, who will chair the Congress Organizing Commission, further solidifying the party's strategic direction.
With this blend of seasoned leaders and emerging figures, Feijóo's Partido Popular aims to embody a modern organizational model, adaptable and rooted in the social realities of Spain. The Statutory Proposal represents a pivotal opportunity to reaffirm the PP's commitment to internal cohesion and the enhancement of its political structure.
