Interim president vows stability following Yoon Suk Yeol's removal
In a decisive response to the recent political upheaval, South Korea’s interim president, Han Duck-soo, pledged on Friday to ensure national stability regarding security and diplomacy. This commitment follows the unanimous decision by the Constitutional Court to uphold the impeachment of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.
"In my role as interim president, I will ensure there are no gaps in national security or foreign affairs, maintaining a steadfast and unwavering security posture," Han declared during a televised address.
The Constitutional Court's ruling confirmed Yoon's removal from office, primarily due to his brief declaration of martial law last December. As a result, South Korea is now required to hold a presidential election within the next 60 days.
Han emphasized his dedication to facilitating a smooth transition to the next government, assuring the public of a "fair" electoral process. He also expressed his commitment to maintaining public order, stating that it is essential for citizens to feel secure during this tumultuous period.
In an urgent meeting with government officials, Han called on the Executive Branch to continue addressing critical outstanding issues, particularly the tariffs imposed by the United States on South Korea. "I urge you to ensure there are no lapses in state affairs during this interim period, especially in response to the reciprocal tariffs announced by the Trump administration," he stressed.
The interim president also appealed to government officials to demonstrate "political neutrality" to guarantee a fair early election, urging political circles and the National Assembly to "set aside their differences" and unite "wisely" for the nation's future.
