Mexican Navy vessel collides with Brooklyn Bridge causing fatalities and injuries

A Mexican Navy training ship crashed into New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge, resulting in two deaths and 19 injuries, according to Mayor Eric Adams. The ship, carrying 277 people, sustained damage to its masts after striking the iconic bridge, though the 142-year-old structure itself avoided major damage.

Footage shows the vessel sailing under the bridge, with its three masts hitting the bridge’s deck and breaking. The ship, flying a large Mexican flag, then drifted toward the riverbank while onlookers moved away. Some sailors were seen trapped in the damaged rigging.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident. Eyewitnesses reported seeing someone hanging from the rigging for several minutes before being rescued, and two individuals were evacuated by stretcher.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed sorrow over the deaths and extended condolences to the families. The Mexican Navy confirmed the vessel Cuauhtemoc, used for cadet training, was damaged and unable to continue its journey. Mexican diplomats are working with local authorities to assist the affected personnel.

The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, spans nearly 1,600 feet and is supported by two stone towers.
