Elton John Shares Struggles with Vision Loss at Musical Premiere
Elton John recently shared his ongoing battle with vision loss while attending the premiere of his new stage musical The Devil Wears Prada in London. The legendary musician, who composed the score for the production, revealed that an infection has caused significant vision impairment, making it challenging for him to see his own work on stage.
Speaking to the audience at the gala event, John, 77, explained that due to his condition, he had been unable to attend many of the musical's previews. "I haven't been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight," he said. "So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and boy, it sounded good tonight."
In September, John disclosed that an infection had left him with only limited vision in one eye. While his condition is improving, he emphasized that the recovery process is slow. He shared the update on social media, explaining, "I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye."
The Devil Wears Prada is a stage adaptation of the popular 2006 film that follows a young journalist navigating the high-stakes world of fashion. The musical features Vanessa Williams in the role of Miranda Priestly, the iconic character portrayed by Meryl Streep in the movie.
The event, which served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, attracted numerous celebrities and figures from the fashion industry, including designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is widely believed to have inspired the Priestly character. Wintour herself described the musical as "entertaining."
Despite his struggles, Elton John’s contribution to the world of theater remains significant, and his resilience continues to inspire fans and colleagues alike.
