Gaza’s children at risk as blockade worsens malnutrition crisis
At least 60,000 children in the Gaza Strip face severe health risks due to malnutrition, as food supplies dwindle under Israel’s ongoing blockade. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, the situation is exacerbated by the lack of adequate nutrition and access to drinking water, alongside a ban on critical vaccinations, including those for polio.
Since March 2, no aid has entered Gaza, which has left its 2.3 million residents without essential supplies like food, medical equipment, and fuel. The closure of 21 nutrition centers has further affected about 350 children already suffering from malnutrition.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has also expressed concern, warning that hundreds of thousands are at risk of hunger as Israel's military operations disrupt food aid. The WFP has been unable to deliver new food supplies for over three weeks, with remaining stocks expected to last only two more weeks.
The blockade has also led to water shortages, with Israel halting the flow from the Mekorot water company, cutting off 70% of Gaza’s water supply. The loss of water supply, combined with a lack of food and medical aid, is pushing Gaza towards a humanitarian disaster.
