Greenland's Defiant Stance Against Trump's Offer

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute Egede has firmly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to incorporate the island into the United States. Egede emphasized that the Greenlandic people will determine their own future and have no desire to become part of either Denmark or the U.S.

Egede made these statements in response to Trump’s repeated remarks about making Greenland a U.S. territory, during which Trump promised financial benefits and security to its citizens. In a message on Wednesday, Egede clarified, "We do not want to be Americans, nor Danes, we are Kalaallit [Greenlanders]. The Americans and their leader must understand that. We are not for sale and cannot be taken. Our future is determined by us in Greenland."

Trump reiterated his intentions in his annual speech to the U.S. Congress, stating that Greenland’s “small population” and “large piece of land” were critical for U.S. military security. He also promised to ensure the safety and prosperity of Greenlanders, declaring, “We will keep you safe, we will make you rich, and together, we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.”

However, despite Trump’s offers, Greenland’s Inuit Ataqatigiit party, which governs the territory, made it clear that it would not rush into a vote on independence, noting the potential economic consequences. Opinion polls suggest most Greenlanders oppose joining the U.S., though many favor eventual independence from Denmark.

Even before his second term, Trump had expressed a desire to integrate Greenland into the U.S., despite Denmark’s insistence that the island is not for sale. Greenland’s valuable location and natural resources, including minerals, are of strategic importance to the U.S., especially in terms of military security.

Trump has shown no sign of abandoning his plans, stating, "We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America." However, he has made it clear that he will persist in his efforts to acquire the territory, saying, “One way or the other, we’re going to get it.”
