Morocco's gas reserves reach 20 trillion cubic feet milestone

A British energy firm's commitment to Morocco's natural gas sector remains steadfast as significant reserves await development. Sound Energy's Executive Chairman Graham Lyon revealed in a recent Attaqa interview that the country's gas potential surpasses 20 trillion cubic feet, highlighting Morocco's emergence as a key player in regional energy markets.

While Sound Energy recently sold a portion of its Moroccan assets to Managem Group for $45.2 million, the company maintains substantial interests in the region. The deal, finalized in December 2024, left Sound Energy with a 20% stake in the Tendrara production concession and 27.5% in both the Tendrara Grande and Anoual exploration licenses.

The company's primary focus lies in developing the Tendrara gas field in Al Gharb Morocco, though no drilling has occurred in the past five years. Two new wells are planned: SPK-1 in Tendrara Grande and M5 in the Anoual block, with at least one expected to begin drilling by late 2025. MANA Energy, a Managem Group subsidiary and Sound Energy shareholder, will fund these operations.

Production at the Tendrara field faced delays due to manufacturing and supply chain disruptions in 2022 and 2023, complicated by global challenges including European conflicts and steel plant closures. Despite these setbacks, Lyon confirmed that gas production and sales are scheduled to commence by late fall 2025.

The company is currently working with the Moroccan Ministry of Energy and Sustainable Development to extend licenses for both the Tendrara and northwestern Anoual exploration blocks, with approvals anticipated in the near future.

Through these developments and its continued presence in Morocco, Sound Energy demonstrates its commitment to addressing the country's expanding energy requirements while maintaining strategic partnerships with local stakeholders.
