Suicide bombing kills dozens at Somalia army recruitment center

A suicide attack at an army recruitment center in Mogadishu, Somalia, resulted in the deaths of at least 10 people. The bomber struck a line of young recruits waiting outside the Damanyo military base on Sunday.

Witnesses described seeing many teenagers queuing at the base gate when the attacker detonated explosives, causing chaos and thick smoke. One eyewitness recalled the sudden blast as they passed by in a bus, unable to immediately see the casualties.

A military officer named Suleiman reported that the bomber arrived in a fast-moving tuk-tuk, exited quickly, and detonated himself among the recruits, killing at least 10 people including both soldiers and civilians. Authorities expect the death toll may increase.

Medical staff confirmed 30 wounded were treated, with six dying instantly. Another source indicated at least 11 deaths. The government has secured the area.

No group has claimed responsibility, but the attack resembles a 2023 bombing at a nearby military base that killed 25 soldiers. This incident follows the recent assassination of a local battalion commander amid fears of al-Shabab militants infiltrating government forces. Al-Shabab, engaged in a long conflict with Somalia’s government, regularly targets military and government officials.
