Trudeau Reportedly Considering Resignation Amid Liberal Party Decline

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly considering stepping down as leader of the ruling Liberal Party after nearly nine years in office, although no final decision has been made, according to a source familiar with the matter. The announcement could come as early as this week, potentially ahead of a critical caucus meeting on Wednesday.

Trudeau's potential departure comes as the Liberal Party faces mounting challenges. Polls show the party trailing significantly behind the opposition, with an election required by late October. Increasingly alarmed by poor polling and recent losses in special elections, some Liberal legislators have publicly urged Trudeau to resign.

The timeline and terms of Trudeau’s potential resignation remain uncertain. He could either step down immediately or stay on as interim leader until a successor is chosen. The prime minister has reportedly discussed the possibility of Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc temporarily assuming leadership, though this option may be complicated if LeBlanc decides to run for party leader himself.

Trudeau's leadership tenure, which began in 2013, saw the Liberals rise from third place to form a majority government in 2015, fueled by a progressive platform. However, his administration has faced growing criticism over economic challenges, a strained immigration system, and allegations of political mismanagement. Tensions within his cabinet escalated recently when former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned after opposing Trudeau’s spending proposals.

While Trudeau’s government spent heavily during the pandemic to support the economy, rising costs and dissatisfaction with policies have eroded public confidence. Trudeau, now 53, appears to face increasing pressure to step aside, a move that could prompt calls for an early election to stabilize the political landscape.
