Israel Orders Evacuation of Critical Gaza Hospitals Amid Escalating Conflict
Israel has issued an immediate evacuation order for staff and patients from two of Gaza's most vital hospitals, Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya and al-Awda Hospital in Jabalia, due to the threat of military attacks. This directive has sparked international concern, especially from the United Nations, which has called for a halt to the targeting of medical facilities.
The Indonesian Hospital, a crucial refuge for many displaced Palestinians, was surrounded by Israeli forces on Friday. At the same time, an evacuation order was given for the al-Awda Hospital, which has been providing critical care for the wounded. Both hospitals have suffered significant damage from repeated Israeli airstrikes since October 2023.
Many of the individuals receiving treatment or seeking shelter at these hospitals were transferred from the recently destroyed Kamal Adwan Hospital. Among them are patients in critical conditions, including children severely injured by the ongoing conflict. The destruction of essential infrastructure, including medical equipment, has put additional strain on the healthcare system, already on the brink of collapse.
Reports also indicate that Israeli authorities have blocked coordination between hospital staff and independent humanitarian organizations, further hindering aid efforts. While Israel justifies its attacks by claiming that Palestinian armed groups are using medical facilities, the UN has raised doubts about the validity of these allegations, describing them as vague and unsubstantiated.
At a recent UN Security Council meeting, UN officials called for an independent investigation into the attacks on medical facilities in Gaza, highlighting the urgent need for the protection of healthcare workers and facilities. The WHO also warned that hospitals in Gaza are rapidly depleting their supplies of food, water, and fuel, while essential medicines have been in short supply for over two months.
The UN's recent findings show that over 136 air raids have targeted medical institutions in Gaza over the past eight months. These continued attacks are part of Israel's broader military campaign, which has resulted in over 45,000 Palestinian casualties and widespread devastation across Gaza since October 2023.
