Senior Russian Military Official Killed in Moscow Explosion
A senior Russian military official was killed in Moscow on Tuesday morning when an explosive device hidden in a scooter detonated outside a building. Igor Kirillov, the commander of Russia's chemical, biological, and radiation defense troops, lost his life in the blast, along with his assistant. The explosion occurred as the two men were leaving a building in southeastern Moscow.
According to the Russian Investigative Committee, the blast was triggered by an explosive device planted in a scooter parked near the entrance of a residential building on Ryazansky Avenue. The explosion, which took place on the morning of December 17, shattered several windows and caused significant damage to the front door of the building, as shown in images released by Russian media.
Kirillov had held his position since 2017 and was sanctioned by the United Kingdom in October, following allegations of his involvement in the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine. The incident occurs as Moscow's so-called special military operation in Ukraine approaches its third anniversary.
