Former Spanish Football Chief Fined for Non-Consensual Kiss

Spain’s former football federation president, Luis Rubiales, has been found guilty of sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup medal ceremony. Spain’s High Court has sentenced him to a fine of €10,800 (£8,942) but acquitted him of coercion charges.

The incident occurred in Sydney as Spain's national team celebrated their victory over England. Rubiales grabbed Hermoso’s head and kissed her on the lips, sparking widespread protests and calls for his resignation. The court has also imposed a one-year restriction, barring Rubiales from approaching Hermoso within 200 meters or communicating with her.

Prosecutors had initially sought a prison sentence, but Rubiales maintained that the kiss was a spontaneous act of affection and that Hermoso had consented. However, Hermoso testified that she never approved the gesture and that it had tarnished one of the most significant moments of her career.

The controversy fueled a broader movement advocating for gender equality in Spanish women’s football, highlighting persistent sexism in the sport. Rubiales ultimately resigned in September 2023 after facing mounting pressure, including FIFA’s suspension and a legal investigation by Spanish authorities.
