Morocco's Diplomatic Support for Syria: A Strengthened Partnership
In a significant diplomatic development, Nasser Bourita, Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Living Abroad, met with his Syrian counterpart, Assaad Hassan Al-Chibani, on Thursday in Mecca. This meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the 7th Joint Ministerial Meeting between Morocco and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), marked a pivotal moment in Morocco's foreign policy in relation to Syria.
During their talks, Bourita conveyed Morocco's unwavering support for Syria's sovereignty and national unity. This statement of solidarity from Morocco is particularly important given the turbulent history of Syria's relations with many Arab states in recent years, due to the ongoing civil conflict. Morocco’s diplomatic outreach represents a step toward fostering stronger ties between the two nations, emphasizing the importance of unity and peace in the Arab world.
In addition to Morocco's diplomatic stance, Bourita also reminded Al-Chibani of the continued commitment from King Mohammed VI to support the aspirations of the Syrian people. The King had previously assured the Syrian president of Morocco's backing in achieving Syria's national objectives, signaling a willingness to engage with Syria in a constructive manner, despite the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
The meeting in Mecca, held against the backdrop of the growing cooperation between Morocco and the GCC, serves as a symbol of the potential for renewed collaboration in the region. The discussions centered around Syria's reconstruction and the restoration of its position within the Arab League, as well as broader regional stability. Morocco’s support for Syria's territorial integrity and national unity is a clear indication that the Kingdom is committed to strengthening relations with Arab countries in pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous future for the Middle East.
This diplomatic exchange highlights Morocco's proactive role in the region, not only in fostering economic cooperation but also in advancing political dialogues that promote peace, unity, and sovereignty in the Arab world.
