Madrid activates level 1 cold weather risk alert
The Madrid community has announced the activation of a Level 1 cold weather risk alert for this weekend. According to the regional health department, temperatures are expected to drop to an average minimum of -0.8 ºC on Saturday, March 15, based on data from the Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) from Barajas, Cuatro Vientos, Getafe, and Retiro observatories.
This alert is part of the Health Impact Cold Weather Monitoring and Control Plan, which runs from December 1 to March 31. The aim is to protect the most vulnerable groups in society, such as the elderly, newborns, those with chronic illnesses, and homeless individuals.
The cold risk level is determined by the predicted minimum temperatures over the next three days in the region’s meteorological observatories. For example, the forecast for Friday indicates a minimum temperature of 3.4 ºC, dropping to -0.8 ºC on Saturday, before slightly rising to 0.2 ºC on Sunday.
Recommendations for Cold Weather: To reduce the health risks linked to low temperatures, the Madrid health authorities urge people to check weather forecasts before heading outdoors. They advise wearing wind- and water-resistant outerwear, along with layers that are not too tight. It’s also important to cover the head and hands, as these are key areas where heat is lost. Footwear should be water-resistant and slip-resistant to prevent falls due to possible ice patches.
Additionally, it is crucial to stay dry, as wet clothing can cause rapid heat loss. The authorities also recommend exercising caution with heating devices, such as wood stoves and gas heaters, to avoid the risks of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning. Before use, ensure the devices are functioning properly, and that ventilation areas are not blocked. Maintaining an indoor temperature between 20-22°C with proper thermal insulation is sufficient for adequate home protection.
