Israel Claims Al Jazeera Journalist Was a Hamas Sniper

Israel's military claimed responsibility on Tuesday for the death of an Al Jazeera journalist, alleging he was a Hamas "sniper" involved in terrorist activities. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet, Israel's security agency, stated that they had eliminated a terrorist sniper from Hamas's Beit Hanun battalion, who also worked as a journalist for Al Jazeera.

The journalist, Hossam Shabat, was killed on Monday during an Israeli airstrike targeting his vehicle in northern Gaza. Israel asserted that, in October 2024, they had uncovered Shabat's direct affiliation with Hamas's military wing. Internal Hamas documents, according to the IDF, indicated his participation in a military training program led by Hamas’s Beit Hanun battalion in 2019.

Al Jazeera confirmed the incident, stating that Shabat was targeted in an Israeli drone strike while traveling near a gas station in Beit Lahia. Gaza’s Civil Defense agency also confirmed his death. The attack came after Israel resumed heavy airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza last week, ending a brief six-week ceasefire with Hamas.
