Québec Implements Province-wide Mobile Phone Ban in Schools by 2025
Starting in the 2025 school year, mobile phones, earphones, and personal electronic devices will be completely banned in all schools across Québec, as announced on Thursday by Bernard Drainville, the Minister of Education for the Canadian province.
Previously, this ban was only applied in classrooms since January 2024. However, the new measure will extend to all school facilities with the aim of minimizing distractions, promoting student focus, and enhancing the educational environment.
The decision is supported by a survey from the Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignement, which found that three out of four teachers back a full ban on phones in schools.
Alongside this new regulation, the Québec government has also revealed the creation of a specialized intervention team to support schools dealing with severe issues such as armed violence. This unit will have an annual budget of 2.3 million dollars and will intervene approximately 40 times each year.
“The goal is not to blame or stigmatize schools but to provide them with swift and tailored support during crises,” stated Minister Drainville.
Québec is home to around 2,600 schools, making this decision a significant turning point in the management of school life in Canada.
