Morocco's innovative pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale
Morocco recently unveiled its pavilion at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, held in Venice. The event, which runs from May to November, showcases the country's creative and architectural prowess on the global stage.
The pavilion is a product of collaboration between Morocco’s Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and the Ministry of National Territory Planning, Urbanism, Housing, and City Policy. This initiative underscores the country’s ongoing commitment to supporting its creative community, a vision led by King Mohammed VI. It also serves as a significant step in highlighting Morocco’s talent in architecture and design, internationally.
At the heart of the exhibition is a groundbreaking project titled “Materiae Palimpsest,” designed by Moroccan architects Khalil Morad El Ghilali and El Mehdi Belyasmine. This project reimagines “earth architecture,” integrating traditional Moroccan craftsmanship with modern digital technologies. The project aims to redefine collective intelligence in construction, addressing contemporary environmental and social challenges.
The immersive exhibition offers visitors an exploration of earth construction, focusing on its sustainability, adaptability, and aesthetic appeal. Through a multi-scale approach, the project emphasizes principles of knowledge transmission and the circular economy.
The Moroccan pavilion serves as both a celebration of the country’s rich architectural heritage and a platform for forward-thinking design approaches. It stands as a beacon of Morocco’s evolving role in the global architecture conversation.
