Morocco and Syria Reignite Diplomatic Ties With Embassy Reopenings
Syria has formally expressed its appreciation to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his recent decision to reopen the Moroccan embassy in Damascus. The announcement was made by Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani following a meeting with Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita.
Al-Shaibani described the relationship between Syria and Morocco as "very good" and voiced his government’s gratitude for Morocco’s efforts to strengthen bilateral ties. He emphasized the desire to expand cooperation, particularly in economic and investment sectors across the Arab world.
During the meeting, Minister Bourita reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment as outlined by King Mohammed VI in his speech at the 34th Arab League Summit in Baghdad. In that address, the King confirmed Morocco’s intent to restore its diplomatic presence in Syria—a presence that was suspended in 2012. He emphasized that this move aims to deepen the long-standing relationship between the two nations and their peoples.
King Mohammed VI also reiterated Morocco’s consistent position of solidarity with Syria, referencing a past letter addressed to President Ahmed Al-Sharaa. In it, the King underscored Morocco’s support for the Syrian people's pursuit of freedom, stability, and the preservation of national sovereignty and territorial unity.
To implement this decision, Minister Bourita announced that a Moroccan technical team will visit Syria in the coming days to oversee the necessary arrangements for reopening the embassy. Likewise, Foreign Minister Al-Shaibani stated that Syria will send a technical delegation to Rabat to reopen its embassy in Morocco, marking a mutual step toward renewed diplomatic collaboration.
