Israel strikes Yemen’s main airport amid rising tensions
The Israeli military reported that it launched airstrikes on Yemen’s primary airport in Sanaa on May 6, targeting key infrastructure in the city. Witnesses described four separate explosions, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Houthi rebels, who are aligned with Iran. This attack follows an earlier Israeli warning for people to evacuate the area near Sanaa International Airport, which came a day after airstrikes on Hodeidah port in retaliation for a Houthi missile that landed near Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport.
Israeli officials had issued a statement urging civilians to leave the area for safety, accompanied by a detailed map of the zone around the airport. Sources within the airport informed Reuters that Tuesday’s strikes hit several civilian aircraft, the departures terminal, the airport runway, and a military air base under Houthi control.
The conflict has intensified as the Houthis continue their attacks, in response to Israel’s military actions in Gaza. On Sunday, the Houthis announced plans to impose a “comprehensive” aerial blockade on Israel by repeatedly targeting its airports.
The Israeli airstrikes on Hodeidah port on Monday resulted in four deaths and 39 injuries, according to the Houthi-controlled health ministry. No immediate reports of casualties were confirmed from Tuesday's attacks.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel vowed retaliation after the Houthi missile strike near Ben Gurion Airport, which caused several European and U.S. airlines to cancel flights. The Houthis have been targeting Israel and shipping routes in the Red Sea, framing their actions as solidarity with the Palestinian cause in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
