Valls Considers Flexibility for Tourist Tax Based on Seasonality

Jordi Valls, the Deputy Mayor for Economics in Barcelona, has suggested the possibility of introducing "some flexibility" in the tourist tax depending on whether it's high or low season. However, he is not convinced about extending this flexibility to conferences, as requested by the tourism sector. He explained that differentiating between tourists and conference attendees presents a "problem."

In an interview with 'Betevé,' Valls noted that the challenge lies in determining who is attending a conference and who is simply a tourist. He did mention, however, that he doesn't see it as problematic for the tourist tax to be higher in peak season and reduced in the off-season. Still, he emphasized that further study would be needed, and the final decision would rest with the city council.

Regarding the potential flexibility of the tourist tax, Valls stressed that it should never lessen the council's ability to regulate tourist flows "when necessary." As for the proposal to raise the tax from four to eight euros per person per night, he affirmed that any increase should be implemented gradually.
