Spain introduces direct Barcelona-Seville rail service for seamless travel

Spain's public rail operator, Renfe, is set to enhance travel connectivity between Catalonia and Andalusia with a new direct high-speed AVE train service. This innovative route, launching on April 23, 2025, eliminates the need for passengers to change trains in Madrid, streamlining the journey significantly.

The new service will see trains depart from Seville-Santa Justa at 6:00 AM, arriving at Barcelona-Sants at 12:41 PM, before continuing to Figueres near the French border, completing the journey by 1:44 PM. Along the way, the train will make stops in various cities, including Córdoba, Puertollano, Ciudad Real, Zaragoza, Lérida, Tarragona, and Girona.

In the reverse direction, daily departures from Barcelona-Sants will occur at 4:58 PM, arriving in Seville at 10:49 PM, with stops in Zaragoza, Madrid, and Córdoba. The fastest journey time is projected at five hours and 48 minutes, with ticket prices starting at approximately €100 each way.

This new service complements six existing daily routes that require changes between Seville and Barcelona, which will remain operational. These alternative services typically take between six and seven hours and provide a variety of pricing options.

Additionally, Renfe will maintain its integrated ticket system, enabling passengers to combine different routes seamlessly without the hassle of purchasing multiple tickets. Other train operators, such as the low-cost Iryo service, also offer connections between Seville and Barcelona, with travel times just under six hours. Although Ouigo does not directly serve this route, passengers can still travel from Barcelona to Madrid and then to Seville with separate tickets.

This direct service marks a significant improvement in rail travel options in Spain, promising not only to enhance convenience but also to encourage greater mobility between two of the country's most vibrant regions.
