Xabi Alonso named head coach of Real Madrid until 2028
Real Madrid has officially announced the appointment of Xabi Alonso as their new head coach. The former Bayer Leverkusen manager has signed a contract with the club that will run until June 30, 2028, the Madrid club confirmed in an official statement.
At 43 years old, Alonso takes over from Carlo Ancelotti, who recently bid farewell to fans at Santiago Bernabéu in an emotional ceremony.
“This is a very special day that I will remember forever. I am thrilled to be back home. Although I have been away for several years, my connection with Real Madrid has always remained strong. From the moment I arrived at Valdebebas, this feeling grew and intensified. This marks the beginning of a new chapter, and I want to thank the president for his trust and for believing that I am the right person to lead this new era, which I face with energy and enthusiasm. I sense the fans share this excitement to make the club’s history even greater,” Alonso said after signing.
With this move, Real Madrid begins a fresh phase under the guidance of one of their legendary former players. The Spanish midfielder, who played for Liverpool (2004–2009), Real Madrid (2009–2014), and Bayern Munich (2014–2017), will officially start his coaching role on June 1.
A 2010 World Cup winner and two-time European champion (2008, 2012), Alonso returns to the club where he began his coaching career, having worked with the youth teams since 2018, shortly after retiring as a player.
