Morocco and Italy advance driving permit reciprocity deal

A groundbreaking agreement on mutual recognition of driving licenses between Morocco and Italy took center stage at Thursday's Government Council meeting in Rabat. The accord, signed on March 27, 2024, in Rome, was presented alongside Bill 38.24 for ratification.

Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita introduced the agreement, which aims to streamline road travel between the two nations. Under the new framework, each country will recognize valid, non-provisional driving permits issued by the other party, provided they contain complete driver identification and meet age requirements for specific license categories.

The agreement offers significant benefits to license holders from both nations. Drivers can operate motor vehicles within their permitted categories for up to one year after establishing residency in the partner country. Furthermore, citizens relocating permanently can exchange their national driving permit for an equivalent one in their new country of residence without theoretical or practical testing.

An exception applies to drivers with special needs, who must complete a practical examination. This provision ensures appropriate accommodation while maintaining road safety standards.

The development marks a significant step forward in bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Italy, promising to enhance mobility and simplify administrative procedures for citizens of both nations.
