Argentina Plans to Leave WHO Following US Decision

Argentina has announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), mirroring a similar move by the United States last month. President Javier Milei’s office confirmed the decision, citing fundamental disagreements over health policies, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spokesman Manuel Adorni emphasized that Argentina would not permit international organizations to interfere with its sovereignty. He added that the decision allows for greater flexibility in designing policies tailored to national needs while ensuring better resource allocation.

Milei, who identifies as an "anarcho-capitalist," has openly expressed admiration for US President Donald Trump. Trump's administration recently finalized the US withdrawal from the WHO, criticizing its pandemic response and alleging financial mismanagement.

As the organization’s largest financial contributor, the US exit is expected to impact global health funding. Argentina’s move follows Milei’s broader economic strategy since taking office in December 2023, which includes deep budget cuts to eliminate the fiscal deficit. While these measures have increased poverty rates, Argentina recorded its largest-ever trade surplus in 2024 due to reduced imports and spending.

Milei was also the first foreign leader to meet Trump at his Florida estate after the Republican's election victory in November.
