Morocco's severe water deficit threatens agriculture in Souss Massa region
The Souss Massa basin is experiencing an unprecedented water crisis, with dam levels plummeting 82% below average during the 2023-2024 hydrological year. The region has seen rainfall decrease by 59.3%, putting significant strain on both drinking water supplies and agricultural operations.
At a recent meeting of the Souss Massa Hydraulic Basin Agency on February 12, 2025, officials reviewed the agency's 2023 financial performance and outlined strategic plans for 2025. Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka highlighted the government's response to the water shortage, referencing King Mohammed VI's directive to implement innovative solutions and strengthen water management practices.
To combat the crisis, authorities are advancing several infrastructure projects, including dam expansion initiatives and the development of desalination facilities. The government is also undertaking a comprehensive update of the National Water Strategy, with particular emphasis on climate change adaptation measures. These efforts are complemented by nationwide campaigns to promote water conservation awareness among citizens.
The critical situation in the Souss Massa basin exemplifies the growing challenges of water resource management in drought-prone regions, underlining the urgency of implementing sustainable solutions to safeguard water security.
