Morocco and France Collaborate on Sustainable Agriculture and Social Reforms

Morocco’s Crédit Agricole and France’s Development Agency (AFD) have strengthened their partnership with a €2.1 million program aimed at supporting Moroccan farmers in adapting to climate change. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote eco-friendly farming practices and bolster rural development.

The program builds on two earlier agreements, signed in April, totaling €70 million. These deals focus on water conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable agricultural projects. Mohammed Fikrat, President of Crédit Agricole, emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, "This partnership helps Moroccan agriculture stay stronger in the face of climate change."

Quiterie Pincent, AFD’s Director in Morocco, highlighted the long-standing partnership between the two organizations: “With this new support program, which partly uses resources from the Green Climate Fund, we are deepening a partnership that has been advancing for more than 10 years, helping Moroccan agriculture adapt to climate change.”

Supported by the Green Climate Fund, the new program is the latest milestone in a decade-long collaboration. French Ambassador Christophe Lecourtier joined the program's launch, underscoring its importance in fostering sustainable farming.

Crédit Agricole, a leader in rural development since 1961, is committed to equipping farmers with modern tools and sustainable practices. Similarly, AFD operates in 150 countries, integrating environmental care with economic growth. A joint statement from the two institutions reiterated their shared vision for helping Moroccan agriculture transition toward greener practices.

Social Reforms Boosted by Franco-Moroccan Cooperation

In addition to agricultural initiatives, Morocco and France recently signed two major agreements worth €150 million to support Morocco’s social reforms. One deal, valued at €100 million, aims to improve health insurance coverage and promote social equity, while the other allocates €50 million to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment.

These agreements align with King Mohammed VI’s vision to support vulnerable populations. A separate aid program, valued at MAD 25 billion, is set to benefit four million families, focusing on children and the elderly. The overarching goal is to reduce poverty and improve quality of life for those in need.

This multifaceted collaboration between Morocco and France reflects a shared commitment to tackling pressing challenges, from climate adaptation to social equity, paving the way for sustainable and inclusive development.
