Morocco Remains a Top Travel Destination Despite Earthquake Tragedy
Morocco has faced significant challenges this year, yet the North African nation continues to stand out as one of the most sought-after travel destinations globally. According to a recent Google search trends report from Conde Nast Traveller, Morocco holds the 10th position among the top 10 most Googled travel locations worldwide.
This enduring popularity is remarkable, considering the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Al Haouz region in September, causing extensive damage and leaving thousands injured and homeless. This tragic natural disaster garnered global attention and raised concerns for the country's well-being. However, even in the aftermath of such destruction, Morocco's allure for tourists remains steadfast.
Marrakech, a city that experienced damage from the earthquake, remarkably stands as the 5th most Googled city for travel. Conde Nast suggests that the strong outpouring of support for Morocco's tourism industry reflects travelers' desire to contribute to the nation's economic recovery as it rebuilds. Given that tourism is one of Morocco's primary sources of income, it serves as a beacon of hope during this crisis.
Google Trends data reveals a notable surge in searches for "Morocco earthquake" in September across various languages, highlighting widespread interest and concern. There was also increased curiosity about Morocco's significant 1969 earthquake. Interestingly, Morocco topped search trends last year during the Qatar World Cup after its national football team reached the semi-finals.
Beyond the tragedy, Morocco captivates visitors with its vibrant cities, iconic landmarks, and rich cultural sites. As Conde Nast eloquently puts it, "A jewel box of colors, sights, and sounds in its cities, and a vast expanse of history and culture beyond – we’re not surprised the support for this gem of a country is in the top 10 this year."
Morocco shares the top 10 list with European favorites such as Greece, Spain, Italy, and Portugal. However, Morocco distinguishes itself as a filming location for blockbusters like Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and the upcoming Gladiator 2, proving its ability to compete with the aesthetic appeal of its Mediterranean neighbors. The nation stands resilient as a haven for the curious, adventurous, and avid traveler.
