Stellantis Charges Into the Future With EV Battery Swap Partnership
While electric vehicles hold the promise of a greener future, the lingering concern of 'range anxiety' continues to give some drivers pause. Stellantis aims to alleviate this concern by joining forces with the innovative startup, Ample, to introduce a unique solution.
On Thursday, the automaker unveiled its plan to collaborate with San Francisco-based Ample to integrate the battery swapping company's technology into Stellantis' Spanish rental fleets, commencing in 2024. This strategic partnership will enable drivers to swiftly replace depleted batteries with fully charged ones at Ample's automated swap stations in just minutes.
The program, initially rolling out with 100 Fiat 500es, serves as a practical test to address common consumer worries regarding EV charging times. Beyond consumer benefits, the initiative provides Stellantis with a potential competitive edge by minimizing downtime for its rental vehicles.
Anne-Lise Richard, head of global e-mobility at Stellantis, emphasized, "This solution combines the freedom customers expect from driving an EV with the ease of refueling that they're accustomed to."
This collaboration expands upon Ample's existing success in California, where it has established operational battery swap networks. Notably, Ample's modular battery design facilitates integration into vehicles without requiring extensive reengineering.
If the program gains traction, experts suggest it could establish a framework for broader adoption as more drivers transition to electric vehicles. For the time being, Stellantis and Ample are boldly advancing with an innovative solution tailored for the electric vehicle era.
