6.7-Magnitude earthquake triggers tsunami warning in Northern Japan
A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.7 struck northern Japan early Sunday afternoon, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning along parts of the country’s northeastern coastline.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the quake occurred off the coast of Hokkaido at a depth of around 50 kilometers. Residents in several coastal towns reported strong shaking, but there were no immediate reports of major damage or casualties.
A tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas facing the Pacific Ocean, urging residents to move to higher ground. Waves of up to one meter were initially forecast. Japanese officials emphasized the need for caution, warning that aftershocks could follow in the coming hours.
Japan, located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is among the world’s most seismically active regions and has a long history of powerful earthquakes. The country maintains one of the most advanced early-warning and disaster response systems globally, which was immediately activated following Sunday’s quake.
