A Strategic and Trusted Partner for Germany on Migration
During a meeting held in Essaouira, Joachim Stamp, the German Federal Commissioner for Migration, praised Morocco as a "strategic and reliable" partner in managing migration. The event marked the third session of the Morocco-Germany Permanent Joint Group on Migration, co-chaired with Khalid Zerouali, Wali and Director of Migration and Border Control at Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior.
Stamp emphasized the strength and depth of the bilateral partnership, noting both nations’ commitment to advancing cooperation in migration policies. He highlighted the importance of mutual respect, shared responsibility, and the view of migration as a developmental tool that underpins the partnership.
The commissioner led a high-level delegation and appreciated the constructive and trustworthy environment of the discussions. Several working groups were formed to evaluate migration issues comprehensively.
He further applauded the excellent relations between Germany and Morocco, commending the Moroccan diaspora in Germany for their valuable contributions to German society. He also spotlighted the new German legislation on skilled migration, which offers structured and legal pathways for young Moroccans to work, study, or receive vocational training in Germany.
On the economic side, Stamp expressed satisfaction with the growing bilateral cooperation, especially in renewable energy. He cited major energy projects in Essaouira supported by German industry as evidence of fruitful collaboration.
The meeting is part of the ongoing efforts to reinforce bilateral ties and enhance dialogue on both legal and irregular migration. Discussions focused on promoting lawful mobility, boosting operational collaboration, and developing joint communication strategies to reflect the progress and shared vision of migration as a driver for mutual growth.
The Permanent Joint Group on Migration between Morocco and Germany was first launched in Marrakech on January 23, 2024.
