Achraf Hakimi sets new record for defender goal contributions in a season
Achraf Hakimi has etched his name in football history, surpassing Dani Alves' 14-year record for the most goal contributions by a defender in a single season. The Moroccan international achieved this milestone during Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) 2-0 victory against Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club World Cup, registering his 26th goal contribution of the season.
Hakimi’s decisive assist for Ousmane Dembélé’s goal broke the previous record of 25, set by Alves during the 2010-11 season under Pep Guardiola's Barcelona. The 26-year-old has now amassed 11 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, thriving under Luis Enrique’s attacking 4-3-3 system, which has allowed him to flourish both as a right-back and a midfielder.
A season of consistent brilliance
Hakimi’s contributions have been pivotal across Ligue 1, the UEFA Champions League, and the Coupe de France. Notably, he scored in the Champions League quarter-final and final, cementing his reputation as one of the most impactful players in the world.
His latest contribution on the global stage has propelled PSG into the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, where they will face Real Madrid on July 9. With at least one more match to play in the tournament, Hakimi has the opportunity to extend his record further.
A debate over statistics
The timing of the FIFA Club World Cup has sparked discussions about how its statistics should be classified. Played after the conclusion of the 2024-25 European season but before the start of the 2025-26 campaign, some fans argue that the tournament's goals and assists should count toward the new season. However, Opta and most major outlets have confirmed that these performances are being counted under the current season, solidifying Hakimi's record-breaking achievement.
Dominating the numbers
Hakimi leads all Ligue 1 defenders in key metrics, including chances created (47), progressive carries, and shots on target (13). His extraordinary performances have even sparked discussions about his candidacy for the Ballon d’Or, placing him among the elite in world football.
As PSG continues its quest for a first FIFA Club World Cup title, Hakimi’s record-setting season underscores his unparalleled influence and marks him as the most prolific defender since Dani Alves.
