Air travel between Asia and Europe disrupted by India-Pakistan clashes
Several Asian airlines announced on Wednesday that they had either rerouted or canceled flights to and from Europe due to escalating tensions between India and Pakistan. The disruption follows India’s recent airstrike on the Pakistan-administered part of the disputed Kashmir region. In response, Pakistan claimed it had downed five Indian fighter jets, marking the most serious confrontation between the two countries in nearly two decades.
More than 20 commercial flights have been diverted to avoid Pakistani airspace. According to data from the website FlightRadar24, 52 flights traveling to and from Pakistan had been canceled by Wednesday morning local time.
Taiwan’s EVA Air stated it would reroute its European-bound flights to steer clear of the conflict zone for safety reasons, leading to a 1.7% drop in its share value. Korean Air also confirmed that it had altered its Seoul-Dubai route to pass over Myanmar, Bangladesh, and India instead of using Pakistani airspace.
Thai Airways announced that all its flights to European and South Asian destinations would be rerouted starting early Wednesday, which might lead to delays. Vietnamese Airlines and China Airlines, Taiwan’s flag carrier, also reported that their operations had been affected by the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.
