At least 20 killed in Russian strike on eastern Ukrainian village
At least 20 civilians were killed on Tuesday after a Russian airstrike hit the village of Yarova in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced.
In a statement on social media, Zelensky denounced what he described as a “barbaric Russian strike with an aerial bomb,” stressing that the victims were residents who had gathered to collect their pensions. He urged the international community to take “strong actions” against Moscow.
Footage shared by the Ukrainian president showed bodies lying on the ground near a heavily damaged van belonging to the state postal service, which is often used to deliver pensions in rural areas.
Regional governor Vadym Filachkin later reported “at least 21 dead and 21 wounded,” condemning the attack as “pure terrorism, not a military action.” He added that rescuers, doctors, police, and local officials were at the site providing assistance.
The village of Yarova, located less than ten kilometers from the front line, had about 1,800 inhabitants before Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
“Such Russian strikes must not go unanswered by the world. Russia continues to destroy lives while evading stronger sanctions,” Zelensky declared, repeating his call for increased international pressure on Moscow.
