Bangladesh has approved new proposals to import significant quantities of fertilizers from Morocco, aiming to ensure a seamless supply of agricultural inputs ahead of the upcoming cultivation season. The move strengthens the strategic partnership between the two countries in agricultural development.

Major fertilizer imports approved

According to Bangladesh news agency BSS News, the government recently approved five proposals to import 140,000 metric tons of fertilizers and 10,000 metric tons of phosphoric acid. Among these, Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will procure 30,000 metric tons of Triple Super Phosphate (TSP) fertilizers from Morocco’s fertilizer leader, OCP Nutricrops, at $579 per metric ton.

Additionally, another proposal includes the purchase of 40,000 metric tons of Diammonium Phosphate (DAP) fertilizers, also from OCP Nutricrops, at $778.33 per metric ton.

The shipments are part of an ongoing agreement in which OCP Nutricrops will supply 1.1 million tons of fertilizers to Bangladesh between 2025 and 2026. This long-term contract was finalized during a recent visit by a Bangladeshi delegation to Morocco.

Strategic partnership in agricultural innovation

Youssef El Bari, CEO of OCP Nutricrops, emphasized the importance of the partnership, describing it as a reinforcement of the “long-term strategic relationship” between the two countries. He added that the collaboration paves the way for joint efforts in research, training, and innovation in agricultural methods.

Echoing these sentiments, BADC Chairman Ruhul Amin Khan expressed optimism about expanding cooperation with Morocco, particularly in technology transfer, capacity-building, and sustainable agriculture.

OCP Nutricrops, a subsidiary of Morocco’s OCP Group, plays a vital role in promoting food security across regions. Its focus on sustainable farming practices and farmer-centric solutions aims to improve soil health, crop yields, and overall agricultural resilience.

Supporting global food security

OCP Nutricrops is at the forefront of global initiatives to address food security challenges by providing sustainable and adaptable agricultural solutions. The company integrates science, research, and innovation into its operations, ensuring that farmers have the tools they need to succeed while protecting the environment.

This latest shipment of fertilizers from Morocco further underscores the country’s commitment to fostering long-term agricultural development in Bangladesh and beyond.
