Brahim Diaz Chooses to play for Morocco
In a highly anticipated decision that ends months of speculation, Brahim Diaz has officially declared his intention to represent Morocco's national team, according to a report from leading Spanish sports daily Marca. The announcement marks the culmination of years of persistent efforts by the Moroccan football federation to secure the allegiance of the talented midfielder born in Malaga.
Renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed Diaz's resolute choice, stating, "Brahim Díaz has decided to represent Morocco and accept their official call. Brahim didn't receive any notification of a call from Spain, and his decision is final: he's going to play for Morocco."
The Moroccan federation's pursuit of Diaz dates back to the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where then-head coach Hervé Renard personally attempted to convince the young prodigy to don the Atlas Lions' jersey, promising a central role in the national team. However, Diaz remained steadfast in his desire to represent Spain at the time.
Another attempt was made on the eve of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, following the untimely injury of Moroccan international Amine Harit. Newly appointed head coach Walid Regragui sought to capitalize on the opportunity, but Diaz, still harboring hopes of a Spanish call-up, politely declined the offer.
Marca expressed regret over Diaz's decision, citing Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente's reluctance to actively reassure the player of his place in La Roja's plans as a contributing factor. "It's a shame, but Spain loses Brahim," the newspaper lamented, contrasting the Moroccan federation's persistence with Spain's apparent passivity.
Diaz's choice to represent the country of his ancestors is a significant coup for Morocco, bolstering their already impressive squad with a player of immense talent and potential. As for Spain, the loss of a promising homegrown talent serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fostering and nurturing young players' aspirations within the national team setup.
