Carlsen advances to semifinals after dramatic comeback at Freestyle Chess Tour
World champion Magnus Carlsen secured the 2025 Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour title ahead of the final rounds after a determined comeback victory over Fabiano Caruana in the quarterfinals at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve near Cape Town, South Africa. By reaching the semifinals, Carlsen earned an additional $100,000 bonus and maintained a decisive lead in the overall standings.
Carlsen’s quarterfinal match nearly ended in disaster after a major blunder in the first game with the white pieces, which he later described as a “complete meltdown.” Caruana capitalized on the mistake to take an early lead. Under pressure, Carlsen responded with poise in the second game, seizing the initiative with black and forcing his way into tiebreaks. The Norwegian dominated both blitz games to take the match 3–1, completing one of the tournament’s most intense reversals.
Following the victory, Carlsen admitted the long interval between games allowed him to regain his composure. A critical moment came when he traded queens and devised a tactical sequence that sacrificed his bishop on c6 before recapturing it two moves later, swinging the position decisively in his favor.
The semifinals, set for Wednesday, will see Carlsen face Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov, the reigning FIDE World Cup champion who topped the round-robin stage with consistent performances. German grandmaster Vincent Keymer will compete against American star Levon Aronian in the other semifinal pairing.
Sindarov advanced by defeating Parham Maghsoodloo 2–0, while Keymer edged out Arjun Erigaisi 1.5–0.5. Aronian overcame Hans Niemann 3–1 after tiebreaks. The Freestyle Chess event is contested in the Chess960 format, featuring randomized piece placements that emphasize creativity and adaptability. The eventual winner will receive a prize of $200,000.
Carlsen arrived at the South Africa Finals with 80 tour points 31 ahead of Caruana locking in the season title even before the closing matches. Despite the early clinch, the Norwegian remains focused. “Sindarov looks very good right now, so I’ll need to raise my level,” he said.
