China Mobilizes Space Assets: 8 Satellites Track Deadly Xizang Earthquake Impact

In a swift response to Tuesday's devastating 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Xizang Autonomous Region's Dingri County, Chinese authorities have orchestrated an advanced satellite monitoring operation to support rescue and recovery efforts.

The State Council reports that eight satellites, including the sophisticated Gaofen series and a specialized land ecosystem carbon monitoring satellite, have been deployed to capture detailed imagery of the affected areas. This deployment comes as officials confirm 126 fatalities and 188 injuries as of Tuesday evening.

The satellite fleet has already completed eight imaging missions by Tuesday afternoon, with additional observations planned to provide comprehensive situational awareness. These space-based assets are delivering high-resolution images crucial for damage assessment and rescue coordination.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has further strengthened the response by activating at least three additional satellites through its Land Satellite Remote Sensing Application Center. This coordinated space-based monitoring system aims to enhance the effectiveness of relief operations while enabling precise evaluation of structural damage throughout the impacted region.
