Denmark opts for Franco-Italian missile defense system over US Patriot
Denmark has made what officials are calling a “historic” decision by purchasing eight medium- and long-range air defense systems worth nearly €7.8 billion, choosing European suppliers over the traditional reliance on American technology.
At the heart of this decision lies the selection of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T NG system, known as “Mamba” in France, which unexpectedly triumphed over the US-made Patriot system. This marks the first time the SAMP/T NG has prevailed in a direct competition against its American rival.
Defense analysts see the move as both strategic and symbolic. Denmark, often described as one of Washington’s most loyal allies in Europe, had consistently favored US defense contracts, including its recent purchase of 27 F-35 fighter jets. By turning to Europe for missile defense, Copenhagen is signaling a shift that some interpret as a “message to Washington,” particularly in the wake of recent diplomatic tensions over Greenland.
The acquisition includes long-range systems developed by France and Italy, alongside medium-range solutions to be supplied by Norway, Germany, and France. The SAMP/T NG, equipped with Aster 30 missiles, is seen as a cornerstone of Europe’s bid for greater defense autonomy within NATO.
Experts argue that the decision reflects not only industrial and technological considerations but also a broader political will to diversify defense partnerships. “It is undeniably a turning point,” said one military analyst, noting Denmark’s historic alignment with US defense procurement.
