French hospital turns to crowdfunding to open 22 new beds
Évreux – In a striking sign of the strain on France’s public healthcare system, the Eure-Seine Hospital Center in Évreux has launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the opening of 22 additional hospital beds. The initiative aims to raise €100,000 from citizens by November 30.
The campaign takes the form of a citizen loan. Each participant can lend between €1 and €10,000, with an annual gross interest rate of 2.8%. According to the hospital’s simulator, a €1,000 contribution would yield €1,101.50 over seven years, as the institution gradually repays both capital and interest.
The new beds will be distributed across several departments—including oncology, neurology, rheumatology, hematology, and pulmonology—starting in December 2025. The goal is to ease pressure on overcrowded emergency rooms. The total cost of the project is estimated at €388,000, with the hospital covering the remaining funds from its own budget.
“This project is more than just an investment; it is an invitation for citizens to take part in strengthening public health,” said Jérôme Rifflet, director of the Eure-Seine Hospital Center. By appealing directly to the public rather than to banks, the institution hopes to reinforce trust between the hospital and its community.
So far, more than €7,600 has been collected—still far from the target, but a first step toward expanding capacity in a system under intense pressure.
