Gabbard urges legal action against Obama over 2016 Russia claims
Tulsi Gabbard, the current Director of National Intelligence and former congresswoman, has made explosive claims urging the U.S. Department of Justice to prosecute former President Barack Obama and several top officials from his administration. Gabbard accused them of engaging in a "treasonous conspiracy" aimed at delegitimizing Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory by promoting what she called false intelligence on Russian interference.
Speaking at a press conference, Gabbard alleged that Obama’s administration intentionally manipulated intelligence data to fabricate a connection between Trump’s campaign and Russian election meddling. She referred specifically to the controversial Steele dossier—a document compiled by former British spy Christopher Steele—as knowingly unreliable but used to justify long-running investigations.
“This was a deliberate effort to mislead the American public and to obstruct a duly elected president,” Gabbard stated. “Every individual involved must be held accountable under the law to prevent such abuse of power from ever happening again.”
Among the former officials named by Gabbard are ex-CIA director John Brennan, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Secretary of State John Kerry, Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe, and James Clapper, who served as Obama’s director of national intelligence.
According to documents released by Gabbard’s office, intelligence assessments prior to the 2016 election suggested minimal Russian involvement. These conclusions were allegedly ignored or altered after Trump’s victory to portray Russia as a key influencer in the election outcome.
Critics argue that Gabbard’s actions are politically motivated, pointing to her close alignment with Donald Trump and her controversial appointment, given her limited background in intelligence. Furthermore, Gabbard has previously echoed positions sympathetic to Russia, raising concerns among foreign policy analysts.
Despite the political tension, Gabbard insists her motive is rooted in defending democracy: “The American people deserve to know the truth. No one, not even a former president, is above the law.”
This renewed focus on the origins of the Russia investigation has resurfaced as Trump’s supporters continue to pressure his administration to release sealed documents, including those tied to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. While the broader implications of Gabbard’s claims remain to be seen, the political and legal fallout could reshape the narrative around one of the most contested elections in modern U.S. history.
