Gas leak triggers major blaze near Kuala Lumpur
A gas pipeline leak has led to a large fire on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, injuring over 100 individuals. The blaze, visible from miles away, erupted at 8:10 am on Tuesday in the suburb of Putra Heights, located in Selangor state. The fire, caused by a leak in a pipeline operated by the state-owned energy company Petronas, spread rapidly and endangered nearby villages during the Eid holiday.
The fire destroyed at least 49 homes, injuring 112 people, with 63 requiring hospitalization due to burns, respiratory issues, and other injuries. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities. The state's disaster management unit has been working to rescue trapped individuals, with several people receiving treatment for burns. So far, 82 residents have been rescued and temporarily relocated to a nearby mosque for safety.
Social media has been flooded with images and videos of the explosion, and several residents reported feeling the shockwave that rattled their homes. One resident described the situation: "We heard a loud bang and then total chaos. We quickly evacuated and saw others doing the same."
Petronas confirmed that the pipeline has been isolated, and disaster management officials are working to shut off the valves to extinguish the fire. Although three nearby gas stations were not impacted, they were closed as a precautionary measure. Investigations into the cause of the leak are currently underway.
