Gaza Initiates Massive Polio Vaccination Drive Amid Conflict and Health Crisis
In a critical move to safeguard public health, Gaza's Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the United Nations and various non-governmental organizations, has launched an extensive polio vaccination campaign targeting 640,000 children. This initiative comes in response to the first polio case detected in Gaza in 25 years, identified in a ten-month-old child.
The campaign, initiated under a UN-mediated humanitarian pause, aims to address the urgent health threat amidst the ongoing conflict that has displaced millions in the region. Dr. Moussa Abed from Gaza’s Ministry of Health confirmed that vaccination teams are active in central Gaza.
The UN has dispatched 1.2 million doses of the oral polio vaccine, administered in two doses a month apart. The vaccination is crucial as Gaza, with its densely packed population of 2.4 million, faces significant health challenges due to the war.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has coordinated with Israeli authorities for a series of three-day humanitarian pauses to support the vaccination effort. These pauses are designed to allow safe and effective distribution across Gaza’s various regions, with extensions possible due to logistical hurdles.
The UN underscores that achieving 90% coverage in each zone is essential to control the outbreak.
Amid this public health emergency, the broader humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. The Gaza Health Ministry reports today that the death toll has risen to nearly 40,700, with 89 Palestinians killed and 205 injured in recent days.
The ongoing conflict has resulted in severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies, exacerbating the already dire conditions.
