Lebanese customs employee arrested for alleged electricity theft in Kesrouan
Lebanon’s State Security announced the arrest of a customs employee in the Kesrouan region on suspicion of stealing electricity from the national grid for about five years and reselling it illegally to local subscribers, according to a statement relayed by the National News Agency (NNA).
The arrest took place last Wednesday in the town of Ghabalé, Kesrouan. “As part of its efforts to combat corruption and violations of the public electricity network, the Regional Directorate of State Security arrested a customs employee for allegedly stealing electricity from Electricité du Liban (EDL) for nearly five years and reselling it to subscribers under the pretext that it came from his private generator,” the statement said.
State Security agents seized the cables used in the operation and, in coordination with EDL, dismantled the unauthorized connections. Judicial proceedings have been launched under the supervision of the competent court.
Lebanon continues to face a severe electricity crisis due to chronic shortages in supply. Most households receive only a few hours of electricity per day from the state-run company EDL, forcing many citizens to rely on costly diesel-powered private generators.
