Germany lifts military export ban on Israel following Gaza ceasefire

Germany announced it will resume military equipment exports to Israel starting November 24, reversing the partial embargo imposed in August amid escalating conflict in Gaza. The German government cited the stabilization of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, effective since October 10, as the primary reason for the policy change. This decision marks a return to Germany’s usual case-by-case review of arms export requests, with officials emphasizing the need for all parties to uphold the ceasefire agreements and ensure ongoing humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz initially imposed the restrictions in August after Israel's cabinet approved plans to advance on Gaza City, a move that heightened international scrutiny over military support. The suspension targeted weapons that could be used in Gaza but excluded equipment deemed essential for Israel’s defense against external threats. Germany is Israel’s second-largest arms supplier after the United States, accounting for about 30 percent of Israel’s major arms imports from 2019 to 2023, including naval vessels and armored components.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar welcomed Germany’s decision and called on other countries to adopt similar policies, reinforcing diplomatic ties following recent high-level exchanges between Israeli and German officials, including talks between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Chancellor Merz. Germany reaffirmed its commitment to supporting a lasting peace based on a two-state solution and to assisting the reconstruction of Gaza. The decision has drawn contrasts with other European nations such as Spain, Italy, and Canada, which have implemented or maintained arms embargoes in response to the Gaza conflict.

As Berlin lifts the restrictions, it signals cautious optimism about the ceasefire's durability and the prospects for a sustainable resolution in the region, while closely monitoring developments to respond appropriately to any future changes.
